July 4th | Annual Theft of a Nation

July 4, 1894 was a crucial step in the flagrant theft of Hawaiʻi’s sovereignty. This free and educational presentation takes the audience to the ceremony in 1894 where Sanford B. Dole proclaimed the formation of the Republic of Hawaiʻi against the will of the people and the laws of Hawaii. To bring awareness to Hawaiian independence, La Hoihoi Ea Honolulu and Sacred Times and Sacred Places will observe the 4th of July with a dramatic re-enactment of events, which occurred leading up to the proclaiming into existence of the illegal Republic of Hawaii. Stay for special performances and speakers.

Parking is limited so carpooling is recommended and the group will meet at the Board of Water supply pumping station. Please dress in clothes that can get dirty and bring tools, bug spray, water, and food to share.
Kaniakapupu was contructed between 1843-1845 in Luakaha, Nuuanu Valley. This place served as the summer palace for Kamehameha III, Kauikeaouli, and his wahine, Queen Kalama. It was here Kamehameha III hosted a La Ho’i Ho’i Ea celebration in 1847 with 10,000+ guest in attendance.

The 181st anniversary celebration of Hawaiian Sovereignty Restoration at Thomas Square, Honolulu will be another exciting family fun day full of ono food, educational presentations and speakers, cultural sharing, games and activities for the kids, community discussions on important Hawaiian issues, organizational networking and a free independence Hawaiian concert all day. This year LHE Honolulu is proud to honor two kanaka maoli men who have impacted the lahui with their life’s work and dedication: Sparky Rodrigues and Leandra Wai. Bishop Museum celebrates Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea, Sovereignty Restoration Day.
Established on July 31, 1843, by Kauikeaouli, King Kamehameha III, Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea became one of the first national holidays of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Marking the return of political power to the government of King Kamehameha III after the British temporarily seized control of Hawai‘i in 1843, Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea was celebrated with great pride throughout the 19th century. Celebrations included large community gatherings and formal affairs hosted by the King himself. In the words of Kamehameha III, who proclaimed on this day, “Ua mau ke ea o ka ʻāina i ka pono” (The life [sovereignty] of the land is perpetuated in righteousness).
Join us for an evening of Ea Activations by Kanaka community leaders sharing perspectives on independence, inspired by select mea kupuna showcased in our Bishop Museum original exhibition Ka ʻUla Wena: Oceanic Red and inside Hawaiian Hall. Our observance of this national holiday of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi will also feature educational displays and activities, mea ‘ai provided by Hale Kealoha, mele and more.
